She is the author of Akbar: The Great Mughal, Song of Draupadi: A Novel, Daughters of the Sun: Empresses, Queens and Begums of the Mughal Empire and Heroines: Powerful Indian Women in Myth and History. Her recent book, The Lion and the Lily, examined the rise and fall of Awadh in the context of the global Franco-British wars. In the course of her research, she travelled to Berlin, Chambery, Paris, Wales and London and was able to access French language documents which have been presented for the first time in a work of narrative history.
Ira has participated in a BBC Uzbek service documentary, In the footsteps of Babur, which examined the role of prominent women in Babur’s extended family, a theme she had already elaborated in her most popular book, Daughters of the Sun. Ira also participated in ‘India Marvels and Mysteries’ for HistoryTV18, discussing the role of women in building some of the iconic Mughal monuments.
Ira is an alumnus of Hindu College, Delhi, and has a Natural History Tripos from Cambridge University.
